The evening starts with Mahler’s introspective Rückert Lieder. Each part is delicately scored with solo instruments only used sparingly for effect. The pieces are melodically rich, and highly personal in their contemplation of love, life, and death. The stunning exception is “Um Mitternacht” (“At Midnight”), a dramatic account of a struggle with personal darkness and ultimate resignation that culminates in solemn brass fanfares.
