The Uffizi Gallery is famous worldwide for its outstanding collections of ancient sculptures and paintings spanning from the Middle Ages to the Modern period. The gallery’s collection includes some absolute masterpieces of painting: Giotto, Simone Martini, Piero della Francesca, Beato Angelico, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Mantegna, Correggio, Leonardo, Raffaello, Michelangelo and Caravaggio, in addition to many notable German, Dutch and Flemish works. In addition to its impressive collection of paintings, the Gallery boasts an invaluable collection of ancient statues and busts from the Medici family, which adorn the corridors. Giorgio Vasari started building the Gallery in 1560 initially intended to accommodate the offices of Florentine magistrates which eventually gave name to the museum (“ufficio” means “offices” in Italian).
