As it is the world's largest art museum, one of Paris’ central landmarks and the world's most visited art museum, The Louvre  cannot be ignored. Approximately 38,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century from its collection of more than 380,000 objects, are exhibited over an area of 73,000 square metres.   It simply contains a concentration of the best art in the world. On the other hand, you don’t have to see Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa amidst the jostling crowd, its perfectly fine to simply visit the remnants of the 12th / 13th century fortress in the basement of the museum – a remarkable feat of modern archaeology! It simply reveals the very beginnings of the immense grandeur above, itself a remarkable experience.
