The Guggenheim in Bilbao is housed in a spectacular building on the bank of the Nervión river. This museum of modern and contemporary art was designed by the architect Frank Gehry and has been near-universally hailed as one of the most important, and inspirational buildings in modern times. If you can tear yourself away from admiring the stone, glass and titanium exterior, we encourage you to also find time to visit the exhibitions within. The collections usually highlight Avant-garde art, 20th century abstraction, and non-objective art as well as focus on installations and electronic forms over more traditional media. The highlight is the permanent exhibit, The Matter of Time – a series of weathering steel sculptures designed by Richard Serra, displayed in the 130-meter Arcelor Gallery.
