The Guangzhou Opera House, located in the Chinese megacity Guangzhou (population: 14 million), was designed by world famous architect, Zaha Hadid. It opened to the public in 2010 and has been described as alluring or even intergalactic. Hadid’s original concept plays with the shape of smooth pebbles and the force of geological erosion, both alluding to the river nearby. The building has even inspired fashion – designer Vivienne Tam cites is as the basis for her 2010 collection. The opera holds a 1,800-seat auditorium, and a smaller 400-seat hall. One of Asia’s premiere concert locations, the opera house attracts internationally acclaimed musicians and performers, putting South China on the cultural map.
