Ieva Iltnere (1957) is one of the most striking and creatively ambitious Latvian artists of her generation. She uses an intimate setting to talk about deep and serious themes. The iconography that the artist employs, featuring a highly individualized style, is clearly apparent in the drawing entitled Aptumsums (Eclipse) which uses the same motif that appears in the large-scale painting Kolekcija (Collection) – the iconic shiny black dog by the Japanese artist Yoshimoto Nara. However, this time, instead of gazing at the painting, it’s looking at the eclipse of the sun rather than Malevich’s Black Square.  By playfully quoting works by other celebrity artists Iltnere encourages us to ruminate on the nature of contemporary art, currently ruled by irony, paradox and quirkiness. By the way, the dog, in precisely this same pose, was first installed in New York, on the roof of the Marianne Boesky Gallery.
